When Does Life Begin?
by Bill Earles, 21 Jan 2008

When does life begin?  Pro-choice advocates will argue that it's uncertain when human life begins; that it's a religious question that cannot be answered by science.  They use that and many other arguments to justify abortion.

And then there's this notion of viability.

vi·a·ble[vahy-uh-buhl]
–adjective
1. capable of living.
2. Physiology.
a. physically fitted to live.
b. (of a fetus) having reached such a stage of development as to be capable of living, under normal conditions, outside the uterus.

viable. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/viable (accessed: January 21, 2008).

What about mother nature?  Suppose for a moment that nature intends for a fetus to remain inside the uterus until birth to give it its best chance for survival.  No assurances, just best chance.  Suppose also that to remove a fetus from that life-sustaining environment prematurely would certainly reduce or eliminate any chance of survival.  Are you with me so far?  If so, let's apply that same chance-of-survival concept to other situations.

  • Is a fish out of water likely to live?
  • Is a man sitting naked on the moon likely to live?

The answer is no.  You remove ANY living thing from its life-sustaining environment and it will die.  Period.  End of story.

Folks may not know when human life begins, but I can damn sure tell you when it ends.  It ends when you take a non-viable fetus from the womb and toss it in the trash.
